AN ANGLICAN CATHOLIC SCRIPTURAL ROSARY

This (to my knowledge) is the only Scriptural Rosary that offers verses

from the King James Version of the Bible. Its purpose is to enrich

meditation on the Mysteries of our salvation, commemorated in the Rosary,

by using the traditional words familiar to so many Christians. Since it is

written from the Anglican tradition, the Magnificat and the Nunc Dimittis

have been rendered in the version of the traditional Book of Common Prayer.

Praying the Rosary combines vocal prayer with mental prayer, or meditation.

The vocal prayers are the Apostles' Creed, the Our Father, the Hail Mary,

and the Glory be to the Father (to which the Hail, holy Queen and a

concluding collect are usually added). These are said, with rosary in hand,

as follows:

1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross, saying "In the Name of the Father..."

Then holding the crucifix, say the Apostles' Creed.

2. On the first bead above the crucifix, say the Our Father, and on the

next three beads, three Hail Marys, followed by a Glory be to the Father.

(There is no bead for the Glory be to the Father, here or elsewhere in the

Rosary.

3. On the next bead (just below the medal), announce the first Mystery, and

say the Our Father. Then say ten Hail Marys (called a "decade") on the next

ten beads, concluding with a Glory be to the Father.

4. Repeat step 3: Announce the second Mystery, say the Our Father, followed

by ten Hail Marys, and conclude with a Glory be to the Father.

5. To complete a circuit of the Rosary, repeat step 3 three more times. It

is customary then to say (on the medal) the Hail, holy Queen and the

concluding collect. Finish with the Sign of the Cross, saying, "In the Name

of the Father ..."

Yet these vocal prayers are not the primary focus of the Rosary, but form a

sort of background chant to meditation on the Mysteries, or subjects of

meditation.

There are three sets of Mysteries, five in each set. Normally, only one set

of Mysteries is meditated on per day -- the Joyful Mysteries on Mondays and

Thursdays; the Sorrowful Mysteries on Tuesdays and Fridays; and the

Glorious Mysteries on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

On Sundays, from Advent through Epiphany, the subjects of meditation are

the Joyful Mysteries; in Lent, they are the Sorrowful Mysteries; and from

Easter through Trinity, the Glorious Mysteries.

To aid in meditation on these Mysteries, a Scripture verse is offered here,

to be said before each Hail Mary. The verses which precede the first three

Hail Marys (step 2) form an introduction to the Mysteries, relating to the

source of our salvation in the three Persons of the Trinity and the grace

of salvation as manifested in the three theological virtues.

May the prayerful use of Holy Scripture enhance your use of the holy

Rosary, and bring you closer to our blessed Lord and his Mother.

CONCLUDING PRAYERS

HAIL, HOLY QUEEN, Mother of mercy; hail, our life, our sweetness, and our

hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send

up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most

gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and, after this our

exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O

loving, o sweet Virgin Mary!

V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray. O God, whose only begotten Son, by his life, death, and

resurrection, hath purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation;

grant, we beseech thee, that meditating upon these mysteries in the most

holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may both imitate what they

contain, and obtain what they promise; through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
